چکیده

We consider the question of whether cosmic ray catalysed false vacuum decay can be phenomenologically more important than spontaneous decay via quantum tunnelling. We extend the zero bubble wall width Landau-WKB analysis of catalysed false vacuum decay to include the leading order effects of finite wall width and derive an expression for the thin-wall bubble action. Using this we calculate the exponential suppression factor for the catalysed decay rate at the critical bubble energy, corresponding to the largest probability of catalysed decay. We show that, in general, cosmic ray catalysed decay is likely to be more important than spontaneous decay for sufficiently thin-walled bubbles (wall thickness less than about 30% of the initial bubble radius), but that spontaneous decay will dominate for the case of thick-walled bubbles. Since any perturbative model with a cosmologically significant false vacuum decay rate will almost certainly produce thick-walled bubbles, we can conclude that cosmic ray catalysed false vacuum decay will never dominate over tunnelling in imposing phenomenological constraints on perturbative particle physics models. Effects of Lorentz invariance violation on cosmic ray photon emission and gamma ray decay processes

In this work, we use Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) introduced as a generic modification to particle dispersion relations to study some consequences of single photon emission, known as vacuum Cherenkov radiation, and photon decay processes in cosmic and gamma rays. These processes are forbidden in a Lorentz invariant theory but allowed under the hypothesis of LIV. We show that the emission ...

Transition from decelerated to accelerated cosmic expansion in braneworld universes

Braneworld theory provides a natural setting to treat, at a classical level, the cosmological effects of vacuum energy. Non-static extra dimensions can generally lead to a variable vacuum energy, which in turn may explain the present accelerated cosmic expansion. We concentrate our attention in models where the vacuum energy decreases as an inverse power law of the scale factor. These models ag...

Vacuum decay in curved backgrounds

We evaluate the effect of gravity on the probability of vacuum decay through bubble nucleation for a scalar field in an arbitrary curved background up to first order in an expansion in powers of Rp’, where R is the scalar curvature of the background metric at the location of the bubble and p is the size of the bubble as it would appear in a flat space. The mechanism by which a scalar field in a...

Decay of an inhomogeneous state via resonant tunnelling

We recently investigated the nature of resonant tunnelling in standard scalar Quantum Field Theory, uncovering the conditions required for resonance. It was shown that whereas the homogeneous false vacuum may decay via bubble nucleation, it may not decay in a resonant fashion. The no-go theorem given there is circumvented in this study by considering an initial state other than the homogeneous ...

Cosmic - Ray Electrons and the Diffuse Gamma - Ray Spectrum

Short Title: Cosmic-ray electrons and diffuse gamma-ray spectrum 1 Abstract The bulk of the diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission above a few tens of GeV has been conventionally ascribed to the decay of neutral pions produced in cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar matter. Cosmic-ray electrons may, however, make a significant contribution to the gamma-ray spectrum at high energies, and even ...
